Having a happy, healthy start to the year has never felt so important. We caught up with our charity partners Dogs Trust to see how we can make 2021 extra fun for both us and our four-legged friends.
As a brand with a Scottie mascot, it’s clear to see how much dogs mean to us at Radley London. Our four-legged friends offer more than just companionship, they enrich our lives in so many ways.
As well as being funny and uplifting, it’s scientifically proven dogs do wonders for our wellbeing; from keeping us fit and healthy to lowering our stress levels and speeding up recovery time from illness. They’re also brilliant conversation starters, which is great for meeting new people and combating loneliness when out for a walk.
Whether you’re a dog owner, a volunteer or you’re considering getting a furry friend – here, our charity partners Dog Trust share their top five tips for creating a happy, healthy start to the year for you and your dog.
More daylight means more time to enjoy being outside with our four-legged friends. Dogs can get excited when you take them out for walks as there’s so many fun things going on around them that they can explore. By showing yours how to walk calmly on the lead, you can both enjoy a mindful, calming experience wherever you’re headed.
It’s no news that travel is good for your physical wellbeing, but research suggests that exploring a new place can improve your mental and emotional health too. Plus, it gives your dog a variety of sights, sounds, smells and even surfaces to walk on – and enrichment for all their senses.
Take a flask and practice having them settle down on a blanket while you drink or find somewhere with water so your pooch can safely paddle. It’s a good idea to bring a long-lasting chew or a food-releasing toy on your travels – it’ll keep them occupied and having fun while resting their legs for a little while.
It’s important to plan daily time for games and activities with your dog – and organising a treat trail is a great way to keep your brain active too. It’s a game that all furry friends can enjoy; hide the treats (somewhere safe and sturdy) with your dog watching then let them go and search, praising and encouraging them as they go. Not only is finding treats this way fun for your dog, it’s physically and mentally stimulating too.
Form a stronger bond and trust between you and your dog by working on a new trick. Our enrichment ideas provide mental and physical activity that can help prevent boredom, while teaching your dog a variety of skills such as problem-solving, confidence, agility and searching. There’s never been a better time to introduce new tricks – January just happens to be National Train Your Dog Month.
Establishing a routine is great for both your and your dog’s health, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy new adventures every day. From introducing new treats to planning exciting outdoor activities, noting different ideas in your calendar is a great way to mix things up. Our tip? Remember to have a ‘walkies bag’ ready so you’ll never forget essentials.
